Since the launch of Strategic Development Plan in 2006, the Friends of Dunedin Botanic Garden have been supporting key projects. The Mediterranean Garden was developed as an enticing destination, drawing visitors to the view and showcasing plants from the region through the elaborate traditional Italiante design. The stonework entranceway visually greets the visitor, offering an arrival space followed by a range of routes. The Dunedin Botanic Garden is New Zealand's first botanic garden and holds the status of six star Garden of International Significance.
ArbNet, the global network for tree focussed professionals, has accredited the Botanic Garden as level II. The Camellia Collection is rated as a Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society. The Botanic Garden celebrated its 150 th anniversary in 2013, marking its position as New Zealand’s first botanic garden. It occupies 30. 4 hectares in North Dunedin at an altitude of metres above sea level. An important aspect of The New Zealand Native plant collection is the cultivation of rare and endangered native plant species.
This collection has plants from temperate climates of North Asia, the South, Central and North Americas, Southern Africa, the Himalayas and the Mediterranean. This is a popular area of the Garden that features some beautiful plantings that will change dramatically with the seasons. The planning for the Strategic Development Plan started as an exercise for the Garden staff in 2004. It progressed from an initial framework of ideas for managing the plant collections to developing the physical appearance of the Garden in years. With tall trees and open, grassy glens, the arboretum is wild and beautiful find your own secret spot.
The arboretum is a five minute walk from mid Opoho Road or park in the upper garden carpark. Mature specimen trees have interesting labels and create a graceful, park like atmosphere. Tea is made from a plant that grows beside this lawn Camellia sinensis, in the species border of the Camellia Collection
